Selections from the Ilene Wood Fine Art Collection

Ilene Hochberg is the author of several best-selling books, including Dogue, published in l986 by Main Street Press. This magazine parody, a canine version of Vogue magazine, became an instant international best-seller, selling over 725,000 copies in the U.S. alone. This original pet parody spawned lots of copy-cat knock-offs, none of which sold as well as Hochberg's second magazine parody, Catmopolitan, a feline look at Cosmopolitan magazine. Catmo, which was published by Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, became another international best-seller and spent nine weeks on The New York Times best-seller list in the number two spot during the Thanksgiving to Christmas sales season in l987. The book is a favorite of cat lovers, and continues to sell well today, with over a million copies in print. Vanity Fur was Hochberg's furry look at Vanity Fair magazine, and featured both dogs and cats in lieu of people. The book was a best-seller and has sold over 575,000 copies since its release by Pocket Books in the fall of l988. Forbabes was Hochberg's only book to parody humans‚ a Forbes-like look at babies who mean business. It was published by Doubleday in the fall of l989. Good Mousekeeping (1996), Who Stole My Cheese?!!! (2002), Stylish Knits for Dogs (2005), Dogs by Design (2007), and Posh Pups (2008), are her other titles.

Ms. Hochberg is a savvy individual, known for her wit and style. She has appeared on countless television programs since l986 to promote her projects, both here and abroad. Stories about her, and her books, have appeared in most magazines and newspapers. A media list, and examples of these stories, as well as a television tape is available upon request. She is recognized as a leading authority on pets and style, and she has volunteered her time and talents to promote many "pet" projects, including fund raising appearances for The ASPCA, The SPCA, The Humane Society of New York, The Humane Society of Washington, D.C., and The Veterinary College of Cornell University. In addition, she has been a guest speaker on the topic of Entrepreneurial Women for The Johnson School of Business at Cornell University during its Entrepreneur of the Year Program, and was until recently a founding committee member of the Cornell University Personal Enterprise and Small Business Administration Program.

Prior to her writing career, Ms. Hochberg spent over eight years in retail management as a Director of Fashion Coordination and Visual Merchandising for several department stores, and specialty stores, including A&S and Macy's. In l983, she left retail merchandising to begin her own business, Dogwear. As the designer and manufacturer of functional fashions for pets she created a new and unique niche in a formerly utilitarian industry. The success of Dogwear led to the creation of a canine fashion newsletter, Dog Wear Daily ‚ a knock-off of the women's fashion bible, Women's Wear Daily. The popularity of DWD led to the creation of Dogue, and the rest is publishing history!

In addition to her interest in pets, Ms. Hochberg holds a black belt in shopping. She is an avid craftsperson and do-it-yourselfer, and enjoys fashion, home decoration and interior design.
